Fur Harvesters Auction's December 16, 2003 sale was the first of the 2003-2004 selling season. A renewed interest in beaver quickly became evident as soon as the bidding opened. At this time last year, Canadian shippers were benefiting from a 1.52 US/CDN exchange rate, where as now, the rate is pegged at 1.27 US. The 21% price increase for beaver was offset for Canadian shippers due to the drop of the exchange rate.

US shippers will realize a full 21% increase in beaver prices over last year. As well, US prices on otter, mink, fisher, lynx, and raccoon improved over last December, while prices for coyote and red fox were slightly weaker as anticipated. Clearances on important items were very strong, indicating a healthy advancing market.
